LAPT San José: Humberto Brenes at His Home Tour Stop

When the Latin American Poker Tour brought its Season 1 circuit to San José, Costa Rica, it was playing in Humberto Brenes' backyard. The Godfather of Costa Rican poker was present and correct for Day 1, filming his check-in for the tour's cameras on home soil.

For a player who had spent twenty years travelling to American and European casinos, hosting a world-class tour stop at home carried a different weight. The LAPT existed to give Central and South America its own flagship live series — and Brenes was its most recognisable face.

Why the home stop mattered

Before the LAPT, elite live poker rarely touched Costa Rica. The tour's arrival meant local players could test themselves against international pros without a passport, and Brenes' presence guaranteed the spotlight. His brother Alex would soon prove the point with a runner-up finish in Uruguay.

Brenes balanced the tour floor with online play as 'HumbertoB' — see how the tour era overlapped with WCOOP and online poker. His table presence at those live stops is remembered in The Brenes Show.
