Every poker region has its founding father. For Costa Rica, that title belongs to Humberto Brenes — 'The Godfather of Costa Rican poker', the man who put a small Central American nation on the world poker map long before the tour era arrived.
The title is not ceremonial. Two WSOP* bracelets, 52 career cashes, and $5,377,203 in live winnings made him the country's all-time highest money winner. The credentials back the crown.
What a Godfather actually does
Brenes' influence ran far beyond his own results. He mentored a generation of Costa Rican players, made the country a recognised stop on the international circuit, and gave the region a hero to measure itself against when the LAPT came to town.
