Walk past any tournament table and you will spot Humberto Brenes before you hear him: a small toy shark sits on his cards every single hand. The shark card protector is the most famous accessory in poker, and it earned its owner the nickname 'The Shark'.
A card protector is a small object placed on your hole cards so the dealer doesn't accidentally muck a live hand. Most players use a chip or a lucky coin. Brenes chose a grinning plastic predator — and never let go of the bit.
